A gable garage uses the roof most people picture when they picture a garage: two slopes meeting at a ridge down the middle. It is the most common design behind Chicago homes for good reason — it frames cleanly, it drains fast, and it sits comfortably next to bungalows, two-flats, and suburban ranches alike.
The two-sided slope is what makes it work in our climate. Rain runs straight off, snow slides instead of sitting, and meltwater reaches the gutters rather than pooling against the sheathing. Fewer roof planes also means fewer valleys, and valleys are where most roof problems start after a hard winter.
Underneath, the gable gives you the most usable volume per dollar. Run the trusses with a storage chord and the space above the cars becomes real shelving instead of wasted air. We set the pitch to match the house so the finished garage looks like it belongs to the property.
